Specify a finish that fits the application
The right finish depends on the substrate, intended environment, appearance and assembly interfaces. A finish name alone is usually insufficient for a comparable quotation.
Discuss powder coating, polishing, printing or other required treatments for the specified parts. Availability and suitability must be confirmed for the material, geometry and order; no finish should be assumed to provide an unqualified corrosion or service-life guarantee.
Describe the requirements
Identify visible and non-visible surfaces, the colour reference or approved sample, texture, gloss and any graphics. Explain how the product will be handled, cleaned and used.
| Requirement | Decision to record |
|---|---|
| Substrate | Material grade, thickness and any surface condition that matters. |
| Environment | Indoor/outdoor use, moisture, contact or other relevant exposure. |
| Appearance | Colour reference, gloss, texture, visible faces and acceptable variation. |
| Interfaces | Threads, grounding points, mating surfaces and areas to mask. |
| Dimensions | Critical tolerances and whether they apply before or after finishing. |
| Graphics | Artwork revision, position, orientation and printing requirements. |
| Evidence | Approved sample, checks, test method and required records. |
Agree inspection rather than vague promises
Define how colour, coating coverage, adhesion and cosmetic defects will be assessed when relevant. If coating thickness, corrosion resistance or another property matters, state the required method and acceptance criteria and ask the supplier to confirm the proposed test scope.
A test result for one substrate, preparation process or finish does not automatically apply to another combination. Confirm the test sample, responsible party and report included in the price.
Protect the approved result
Agree the sample or reference used for production approval. Record changes to material, preparation, colour, artwork or finishing route before production continues.
Specify protection between parts, suitable handling and packaging requirements. Consider assembly marks and transport damage separately from defects in the finishing process. Share these requirements with the drawings so they are considered in both the quotation and delivery schedule.
